Question about Modena, Italy

Dear Angelica,

I am planning to be an exchange student living in Modena, in the Emilia Romagna region, for one year.
I have spent time in Italy before, I can speak Italian, but I’ve never been in Modena. I’m planning to rent an apartment.
How are the people like in Modena? Is the city boring ? Is it expensive ? Are there lots of things to see?
Thank you.

Exchange Student

Dear Angelica answers:

Dear Exchange,

I actually did live in Modena for several months a few years ago.

Be aware that it can be quite cold in the winter, with snow falls. If you are looking for the Mediterranean oasis this is not the place. Prices in general were in the medium range, and I must say that the food was excellent. People at the time were nice, but quite provincial and did not allow outsiders to enter their circles in too easily. At least that is the way it was and insiders tell me it has not changed that much 🙂

As a young person I found Modena quite boring at the time and though I hear that there are several interesting festivals & events now I fear that day to day life might still be difficult if a visitor is not accepted within the local circles.

Some of Modena’s events are centered around the auto industry (Ferrari and Maserati are from the area), others target local food specialties such as homemade pastas and Aceto Balsamico di Modena (balsamic vinegar)

It is an hour + from Milano, 30 minutes+ from Bologna, 2 from Venice, 2 hrs or so from Florence, depending the train you choose, your car, the traffic and the police 😉 3hrs + from Rome etc.
Home to Pavarotti, Ferrari, Vasco Rossi, Ravioli, Tortellini, Aceto Balsamico and more 🙂
